Lunch at Paradise Inn. A mountain afternoon outside.

Make the historic Paradise Inn the destination, not an overnight booking. Try the Tatoosh Café for a light lunch or check the seasonal outdoor lunch BBQ. Walk the lodge area, ask rangers about trail conditions, and leave time to simply look at the mountain.

If Paradise Inn is closed or its food service is unavailable, pack lunch or use National Park Inn at Longmire. The Longmire inn operates year-round, but meals and rooms still depend on current operations. If the Paradise road is closed, make Longmire the turnaround; never follow the sample line past a gate.

R1S Quad, equipped for adventure.

The plan’s vehicle is a Rivian R1S Quad with an off-road equipment concept: all-terrain tires, roof crossbars and recovery essentials. Confirm actual factory equipment, tire fitment, loaded dimensions and accessory limits for the specific vehicle. This itinerary uses designated roads; off-road equipment does not permit driving on park trails or meadows.

Model year, battery capacity, connector, starting charge, consumption, loaded mass and remaining range are unknown. This plan does not calculate battery arrival percentages or certify the round trip on one charge.

Charge before the mountain, keep a return reserve.

Puyallup’s Tesla Supercharger at Target, 3310 S Meridian, is a researched charging candidate outside the park. Tesla lists access for other compatible EVs. Confirm the exact site, vehicle compatibility, adapter, working stalls, price and access in Rivian navigation before committing. It is an optional outbound and return stop, not a guaranteed charge.

Rivian says model-year 2026+ vehicles have native NACS; 2022–2025 vehicles use CCS1 and need a Rivian-approved NACS DC adapter for compatible Superchargers. Verify the actual port and vehicle handbook. NPS lists no EV charging stations inside Mount Rainier National Park.

Leave Seattle with a confirmed charge plan. Before leaving Puyallup, use the vehicle’s current estimate for the climb, all stops and the return to a confirmed operating charger, with a buffer for cold, detours and queues. If that reserve is uncertain, charge more or shorten the day. Bring food and water; download maps where you have coverage.

Back to the route
  1. 06:15

    Breakfast first. Then leave Seattle.

Eat before leaving or bring breakfast for the first stop. Pack water, lunch backup, layers and offline maps; confirm the park road and the Rivian’s charge plan.

Food allowance per person · USD 20.00For two · USD 40.00

Downtown Seattle, Washington · approximate city-center start

  2. 07:15

Puyallup: coffee, supplies and a charge check.

Optional charging candidate, with a suggested 30-minute break. Use the vehicle’s actual charging estimate; a necessary charge can take longer. Bring coffee or check nearby opening hours rather than relying on early retail service.

    Target · 3310 S Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98373

  3. 09:15

    Enter the forest at Nisqually.

Approach via Eatonville and Ashford. Have your payment card or qualifying park pass ready. Entrance queues and parking can change the day; keep time in reserve.

Nisqually Entrance · State Route 706, Mount Rainier National Park

  4. 09:45

    Longmire: an easy-paced start.

Allow about 45 minutes for the historic district and, if conditions suit, the 0.7-mile Trail of the Shadows loop. National Park Inn is the year-round lodge fallback. Stay near the main-road side; the historic Nisqually River bridge has a posted weight restriction and is not part of this drive.

National Park Inn · Longmire, Mount Rainier National Park

  5. 10:50

Christine Falls, beneath the stone bridge.

A short photo stop at the signed parking area, around 20 minutes if a space is available. Use the designated viewpoint access; do not stop on the bridge or in the travel lane.

Christine Falls parking area · Longmire–Paradise Road

  6. 11:25

    Narada Falls: mist and basalt.

Allow about 35 minutes. The lower viewpoint requires a steep, often wet 0.4-mile round trip; use suitable shoes and skip it in unsafe conditions. This is not a step-free stop.

Narada Falls parking area · Longmire–Paradise Road

  7. 12:20

Paradise Inn: lunch at the lodge.

Allow about an hour. Tatoosh Café offers seasonal grab-and-go food; the operator also lists a seasonal outdoor lunch BBQ. Check today’s options, prices and hours. Carry a picnic backup rather than relying on a table or a specific menu.

Food allowance per person · USD 25.00For two · USD 50.00

Paradise Inn · Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park

  8. 13:30

A little walking, a lot of mountain.

Ask at the Jackson visitor center about current conditions. Choose the roughly 1-mile Myrtle Falls round trip only if open and suitable, or enjoy the lodge area and established viewpoints. Leave Paradise around 15:00 in this summer plan; do not attempt the full Skyline loop on this schedule.

Paradise Inn · Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park

  9. 16:00

Copper Creek: an early dinner and blackberry pie.

Back outside the park, allow an hour for a relaxed meal at Copper Creek Inn. The restaurant advertises lunch, dinner and homemade blackberry pie. Currently closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas; confirm service before leaving Paradise. If closed, consider National Park Inn before descending or bring food. Ashford is also a useful place to reassess the return charge plan.

Food allowance per person · USD 40.00For two · USD 80.00

    35707 SR 706 E, Ashford, WA 98304

  10. 18:30

    Puyallup: an optional return charge.

Recheck the site before arriving. Charge if needed for the drive home with your chosen reserve; waiting and session time remain unknown. Never depend on this single location if it is unavailable.

    Target · 3310 S Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98373

  11. 20:00

Seattle, with a mountain day behind you.

A suggested evening return, not a guaranteed arrival. Traffic, mountain conditions and charging can make the day longer. Shorten the sightseeing plan if you need an earlier finish.

Entry & reservations

NPS lists USD 30 for a private vehicle, valid for seven days, unless a qualifying pass applies. No timed-entry reservation is required anywhere in the park in 2026. These are dated planning references; check fees, pass eligibility and reservation rules for your travel year.

Official information

Roads & winter equipment

Check NPS alerts and road status immediately before travel. From November 1 to May 1, all vehicles, including AWD/4WD, must carry chains or state-approved alternatives; confirm the approved device for the R1S with Rivian. Seasonal gate hours and weather closures can prevent this summer itinerary.

Official information

Short walks, real terrain

Trail of the Shadows is a 0.7-mile loop at Longmire. Myrtle Falls is about 1 mile round trip from Paradise, subject to snow and trail conditions. Narada’s lower viewpoint is a steep 0.4-mile round trip with about 200 feet of elevation change; wet footing can be slippery. Skip any walk that does not suit your mobility or conditions.

Official information

Stay on established routes

Use designated roads and parking, stay on trails and protect fragile meadows. Give wildlife space, pack out waste and check current pet restrictions before bringing a dog. Waterfalls and mountain weather demand caution even in summer.
